35th Serbian Folkloric Festival

It was wonderful to attend the Gala Dinner marking the beginning of the 35th Serbian Folkloric Festival at Bonnyrigg Sports Club. The night celebrated the rich culture of Serbia and it was great to experience the wonderful songs, dancing and food of the Serbian community in south west Sydney.

I was honoured to have met his Excellency, Mr Rade Stefanovic, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Serbia to the Commonwealth of Australia.

Thank you to the Bonnyrigg Sports Club President, Cedomir Jesic, Michael Andjelkovic and all the organisers for the night.

55th Ward and Olive Memorial Lecture

The City of Liverpool and District Historical Society held the 55th Ward and Olive Memorial Lecture. It was delivered by guest speaker Mrs June Young OAM.

Mrs Young OAM spoke about her 50 years of service as a volunteer and organiser helping those in need in the community.

Her service over the years has made our community a better place and I thank her for all that she has done.

I would like to acknowledge the Society’s Secretary Gail Newman and President Glen Op Den Brouw for their efforts organising the event.

National Housing Plan

The Albanese Labor Government is continuing to implement its ambitious housing reform agenda, with National Cabinet making a series of new commitments.

These commitments include:

• A new national target to build 1.2 million well-located new homes over five years, from 1 July 2024;

• The New Homes Bonus, a $3 billion performance-based funding program, for states and territories that achieve over their Accord targets;

• The Housing Support Program, a $500 million competitive funding program for local and state governments to kick-start housing supply; and

A Better Deal for Renters which includes developing a nationally consistent policy to require genuine reasonable grounds for eviction, moving towards limiting rental increases to once a year and phasing in minimum rental standards.

The Albanese Government has also announced that the Help-to-Buy plan will commence next year. This will help 40,000 low and middle income families buy their first home.

Question to the Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs

I asked the Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Andrew Giles MP about the Albanese Government’s plan to tackle migrant worker exploitation and strengthen worker protections for migrants in Australia.

Hotline to Report Food Quality in Aged Care

Our older Australians deserve access to proper food and a decent quality of life.

That is why the Albanese Government has established a dedicated food and nutrition hotline at the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.

This will allow those concerned to report poor quality food in aged care.

Strengthening Medicare GP Grants

The Albanese Government is delivering on our election commitment to strengthen Medicare and GP clinics across the country.

The Strengthening Medicare - General Practice (GP) Grants Program opened to eligible GP clinics and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations to support them in expanding patient access and improving services.

GP clinics across Werriwa will be receiving grants of between $25,000 and $50,000 to better support patients in our community.

24/7 Nurses in Aged Care

Having 24/7 nurses onsite was a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety - it was ignored by the Coalition. Since coming into Government we have taken action to improve the quality and safety of care in aged care facilities.

The Albanese Government made a commitment to ensure that Registered Nurses were on site in aged care homes 24/7. Recently released data shows we are delivering on that promise.

Older Australians are, on average, receiving care 98 per cent of the time, or 23.5 hours a day.
