Mobile Offices in Werriwa

I hosted a mobile office at Ed Square in Edmondson Park with the Member for Macquarie Fields, the Hon Anoulack Chanthivong MP, and at Bill Anderson Reserve in Kemps Creek.

It was great to be out in the community hearing about what matters to you.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat.

Australia Bangladesh Business Forum

I joined many of my State and Federal colleagues at the first Australia Bangladesh Business Forum (ABBF) Gala Dinner and Award Ceremony.

The ABBF helps foster connections between local businesses and promotes greater ties between the Australian, Bengali and other multicultural communities across Sydney.

It was a lovely evening celebrating many incredible local businesses. I would like to thank the President of the ABBF, Mr Abdul Ratan Khan, and the Secretary, Mr Brian Laul, for the invitation and their hospitality.

Cochlear Visit

I was pleased to have visit Cochlear at Macquarie University earlier this week.

Approximately 3.6 million Australians have some form of hearing loss and that number is expected to rise as our population ages and increases. These numbers explain why research done by companies like Cochlear is incredibly important.

I was invited to tour the facility and learn about the new technologies being developed right here in Sydney, by Australians. Cochlear is an Australian invention and their head office is here in Australia.

The Principal Process Engineer, Mel Clark, and the General Manager of Australia and New Zealand at Cochlear, Ravin Nand and I at Cochlear Australia.

2023 Werriwa Volunteer Awards

Earlier this week I was finally able to acknowledge another recipient of the 2023 Werriwa Volunteer Awards.

Thank you to Suresh Veeracher, from Friends of India, for all that you do volunteering within our community.

School Student Broadband Initiative

More than 1,000 Australian families have already benefited under the Albanese Government's School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI), providing them with one-year of free internet services.

Internet access is critical to the education of students and no child should be left behind.

The Albanese Government continues to work with NBN Co to deliver free internet access for up to 30,000 families.

I encourage everyone interested to visit the website linked below to learn more about the program and the eligibility requirements.

Cheaper Medicines

The Albanese Government reduced the PBS co-payment by $12.50 from 1 January 2023 saving many Australians off their prescriptions.

In the first 6 months of this year Australians have saved over $118 million and residents in Werriwa have saved almost $600,000 on more than 50,000 scripts.

This is just one of a number of measures that the Albanese Government has implemented to reduce the price of medicines and help ease the pressures households are facing.

Tackling Problem Plastics

The previous Government failed to boost Australia’s recycling capacity and fell short of meeting the targets that they had set.

The Albanese Government has announced several measures to tackle the issues in the recycling industry and is working to reduce the amount of waste produced in the first place.

Our government is:

  • Investing $250 million in recycling facilities, including $60 million for hard to recycle plastics. This has funded 57 additional plastic recycling facilities, with 12 already delivered.

  • Reforming how plastic packaging is made, with environment ministers across Australia agreeing that packaging will be subject to strict new rules aimed at cutting waste and boosting recycling. These rules will cut waste, as well as set mandatory packaging design standards and targets.

  • Building a circular economy. We’ve formed a Ministerial Advisory Group to get the best advice on actions the Government can take to advance towards a circular economy.

  • Campaigning on the world stage for a strong new global plastics treaty.

Telco Financial Hardship Assistance

Staying connected is necessary to support education, work and to reach vital services.

That is why the Albanese Government has directed the Australian Communications and Media Authority to make an enforceable industry standard to ensure support is provided to telco customers experiencing financial hardship.
