On 9 May 2023, the Treasurer, the Hon Dr Jim Chalmers MP, delivered a responsible and practical Budget with strong Labor values.
The Budget does three things: provides cost-of-living relief, makes our society fairer, and secures our economy for the future.
The highlights of the Budget include:
Giving up to $500 of energy bill relief to more than 5 million households, including people right here in Werriwa,
Tripling the Medicare bulk-billing incentive helping more than 100,000 people in our community access GP services,
Increasing Jobseeker, Austudy and Youth Allowance by $40 a fortnight for over 14,000 people in Werriwa,
Delivering a 15% pay rise to aged care workers,
Allowing patients, after consulation with a doctor, to be able to fill a script for two months at a time, saving them up to $180 a year for 300 common PBS medications,
Delivering 300,000 fee-free TAFE places,
Investing in renewables and manufacturing,
And delivering the first budget surplus in 15 years,
In the face of global economic uncertainty and high inflation, this Budget deals with those short-term challenges, providing help for Australians under pressure and building our economy for long-term resilience and security.
