Pensioners sick of Centrelink hold times

My office has been dealing with many complaints from local pensioners frustrated with the times they are having to wait on hold when calling Centrelink. Many older pensioners who are less mobile have no other means of contacting Centrelink, as they cannot get to an office and struggle with navigating Centrelink’s website.

The extended hold times are causing many pensioners concern when they get their phone bills. Other pensioners are unable to get through at all and are finding their payments are being cut-off as a result.

At Senate Estimates in October, it was revealed that 55 million calls to Centrelink went unanswered in the fiscal year 2016-17. This is an increase from 29 million unanswered calls in 2015-16 and 22 million in 2014-15.

Meanwhile, in the Budget in May, the Government announced it was cutting 1,200 jobs to the Department of Human Services.

This Government’s cuts to Centrelink staffing are making things even worse for some of the most vulnerable in our community.
