Home Care crisis in South West Sydney revealed

January 23, 2018

In the last days before Christmas, while ordinary Australians were distracted from politics, the Turnbull Government revealed their own failure to fund more home care packages.

Almost 35,000 older Australians living in New South Wales are languishing in limbo waiting for a package and care. Over 1300 of these older Australians live in South-West Sydney.

This includes 27,120 older Australians in New South Wales waiting with high needs, many with dementia, or 758 in South-West Sydney.

“This is a crisis and it is unacceptable,” Ms Stanley said.

“The Turnbull Government’s own website states most of these vulnerable older Australians will be waiting more than a year for a package.”

The Turnbull Government committed in September to readjust the ratio of places to create 6,000 additional packages which, while welcome, is woefully inadequate.

The wait list grew by 10,000 in the last three months of 2017 alone, meaning these additional packages will not come close to reducing the number of older Australians waiting for care.

“The Turnbull Government has known about this urgent situation for months but has yet to turn its attention to this growing issue,” added Ms Stanley

“Older Australians awaiting home care packages in South-West Sydney deserve better.”
