MEDICARE UNDER ATTACK

Anne Stanley, Member for Werriwa, has called out the Morrison Government after changes to the Medicare Benefits Schedule were revealed earlier this week.

Under the Liberals changes, almost 1,000 medical procedures will no longer be covered by Medicare, including many hip, hand, shoulder and cardiac surgeries.

The changes begin 1 July, leaving doctors and health funds with only a few weeks to determine new fees and arrangements.

“This is the biggest threat to Medicare in a generation and another blatant attack by the Morrison Government.

“Patients will be forced to choose between cancelling lifesaving surgeries or be hit with huge bills, in some cases up to $10,000.

“Many patients will now have their surgeries delayed and some have been left out-of-pocket as they have received huge bills they weren’t prepared for.

“People who live in a first world nation like Australia should expect affordable, good quality health care from their Government, not cruel cuts that leave many vulnerable,” Ms Stanley said.
