Morrison-Joyce Government Waiting too Long to Address a Crisis
The recent events in Afghanistan are heartbreaking. Particularly for the people of Afghanistan, the Australian-Afghan Communities and our veterans.
I am especially concerned about the Afghan civilians who worked alongside Australian soldiers and diplomats, wore Australian uniforms and kept our people safe. They now face increasing threats to their lives and the lives of their families because of the assistance they provided our nation.
As the humanitarian and security crisis in Afghanistan escalates, Australia must plan to fast-track visas and evacuations for families of Australian citizens.
For months Labor has been calling on the Federal Government to act urgently to get Afghans who supported Australian operations to safety.
This is yet again another example of the Morrison-Joyce Government waiting too long to address a crisis. We saw it with the bushfires when the Prime Minster was holidaying in Hawaii. We live through it now with a lockdown caused by a failed vaccine rollout and no national quarantine in place.
Now the Prime Minister has failed to act again, leaving countless Afghanis, our allies, to face the prospect of a cruel and brutal regime.
Labor will always advocate for humanitarian aid in times of devastating security and humanitarian crisis.
The Federal Government must step in and do all they can to support the Afghani community in Australia, their families and our veterans.
