In 1901, when Federation was established, Werriwa was one of 65 seats. It takes its name from the Aboriginal name for Lake George. The original seat stretched from South-West Sydney to Lake George.

With population growth, the seat has moved to be around the suburbs of Liverpool and Campbelltown.

The electorate is 111km² and at the 2025 Federal election, there were 117,790 enrolled voters in Werriwa.
