Australian Government Delivering Fresh Opportunities for Suburban Communities
The 2023-24 Federal Budget is delivering fresh opportunities to fund community infrastructure in, with the establishment of the Thriving Suburbs program.
This new program will restore transparency and integrity to grants programs for suburban communities, after almost a decade of secret projects and closed programs under the former Government.
Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King said, “Our suburban communities haven’t had an open and transparent grants program for too long. Australia’s cities and suburbs are excellent places to live, and Thriving Suburbs will help make them even better.”
Thriving Suburbs will support priority community infrastructure in Australia’s capital cities, including sporting infrastructure, arts and cultural upgrades, new or improved open space and community hubs.
Ms Anne Stanley MP, Member for Werriwa, welcomed the announcement of the Thriving Suburbs program, “this program will be open and competitive with grants awarded on a merit basis”.
The program will be complemented by the new urban Precincts and Partnerships Program, also announced in the Budget, which will see the Commonwealth partner with community organisations, local government and state and territory governments to fund projects which transform our cities.
Guidelines for both programs will be developed over coming months.
