Tackling Migrant Worker Exploitation
The Albanese Government has passed new legislation to tackle the exploitation of migrant workers.
Up to one in six recent migrants to Australia are exploited, being paid less than the minimum wage. This exploitation affects all Australians, driving down the wages and conditions of all workers.
From 1 July 2024, those who exploit a worker because of their visa status will face prison time, penalties and fines will triple, and employers who mistreat workers will be banned from hiring any worker on a temporary visa.
These new measures will help workers to raise their concerns and will target employers who exploit workers.
